چکیده

Negation is a fundamental element of language and logical systems, but processing negative sentences can be challenging. Early investigations suggested that this difficulty was due to the representational challenge of adding an additional logical element to a proposition, but in more recent work, supportive contexts mitigate the processing costs of negation, suggesting a pragmatic explanation. We make a strong test of this pragmatic hypothesis by directly comparing speakers and listeners. Speakers produce negative sentences more often when they are both relevant and informative. Listeners in turn are fastest to respond to sentences that they expect speakers to produce. Since negative sentences are only difficult in contexts when they are unlikely to be produced, representing negation is likely less difficult than previously supposed.

The pragmatics of negation across contexts

Why do some negative sentences sound strange, even when they are both true and grammatical? We explore the pragmatics of negation by examining adults’ explicit felicity judgments of negative sentences in context. In Experiment 1, we found that a pragmatically supportive context elicited higher felicity ratings for negative sentences, and that negative sentences expressing nonexistence were rate...

The semantics - pragmatics interface : How it works , why we need it , and where it is ? 1

During the last decades, linguistic theory has been concerned with the syntaxsemantics interface, mainly with issues linked to scope of operators (negation, quantifiers, modals) and with the syntactic or semantic nature of structural representations. One important trend in syntactic theory (for instance the cartographic approach) is devoted to the syntax-pragmatics interface, with strong argume...

Uninformative negation is infelicitous to both adults and children

Why do some negative sentences sound strange, even when they are both true and grammatical? Past work suggests that both adults (e.g., Clark & Chase, 1972) and children (e.g., Kim, 1985) find negation difficult, but context can facilitate the processing of negative sentences (e.g., Wason, 1965). We argue that the effect of context on negation is driven by general pragmatic principles rather tha...

Pragmatics and negative sentence processing

Negation is a universal phenomenon in human communication. All natural languages have negation, yet it seems to be absent in animal communication systems (S Altmann, 1967). We use negation frequently for a wide range of purposes, including rejection, denial and talking about non-existence. According to the Oxford English Corpus, “not” is the 13 most frequently used word in the English language....
